What's in the Other Documents from My Cousins

Additional documents provide the corroborating evidence. These are in the possession of my cousins, other Paul Schreiner grandchildren. They are gathered into one PDF file, other documents.

Let's look at the documents that support the six points of evidence.

1. The birth certificate for his first child, Gizella, known as Margie, is part of the diary document. It lists Nagyécs as birthplace. This is confusing. Is this the father's birthplace or the child's? Clearly, she was born in South Bend, so it must be his. This compares favorably with Nagy Ecs on the manifest. Another source, his obituary (in other documents) in the South Bend Tribune, lists the place as Györ, Hungary. Today Györ is a city in a county called Györ-Moson-Sopron. How this is related to Nagyécs, and especially whether this is an inconsistency, needs examination.

2. The death certificate of Paul Schreiner gives his birth date, May 12, 1877. Click on this for a larger version, or see other documents.

3. This point is in the manifest.

4. Whether there were other Schreiners already in South Bend in 1901 requires more research, perhaps in the 1900 census or city directories in the St. Joseph County Public Library. The reference in the manifest, assuming a spelling variation, seems clear. There is even a street address given, but I cannot make out the handwriting. With a period street list of South Bend, one could discern which streets had a "414 S." address, and that might help reveal the street name.

5. This point doesn't require additional documents.

6. This point also is self-standing from the diary and manifest.

Included in the other documents are several pages from a record book that daughter Katie kept. She and her husband lived in the family house on Catalpa Street with my Grandfather, and later by themselves. Her book has a wealth of names and dates. Much of this does not provide direct support for the identity of the person on line 23, page 232 of the April 27, 1901 manifest of the Graf Waldersee, but it's important family history.

The evidence that the Ellis Island manifest entry for Paul Schreiner has been found seems strong.
