Julia Takács

Did Future Wife Julia Takács Arrive on the Same Ship?

There is a Julia Takács listed on page 184 of the same manifest that we find Paul Schreiner. I found this entry before I found his. We know that this was her unmarried name from several documents: Daughter Gizella's birth certificate, part of the Diary, her death certificate, part of other documents, and other entries in this packet. Sometimes her name is listed as Julianna.

Her EIF record adds her place of origin, Szerdahely. The entry is obscured by a stamp on the manifest, but this reading seems plausible.

What do we find in the manifest (see entry 29)? Her age is given as 15. If she were born on January 9, 1884, she would have been 17 when she arrived in America, a discrepancy. Another discrepancy is in her obituary (other documents) following her death on February 1, 1919. It also states her birth year as 1884, but gives her age as 39. At her death in 1919, she would have been just 35. That is also what daughter Katie gives in her book (also in other documents).

Her manifest entry lists her destination as something I can't discern, although the state might be New York, but it clearly is not South Bend, Indiana. I think it says she is joining brother ? Takács.

There are some 51 other Julia Takács in the EIF records, and probably some Julianna Takács as well. These entries need more examination than I have yet given them.

Why do I think this is my Grandmother? The evidence is not compelling. I do find it unlikely that a different Julia Takács would be on my Grandfather's ship, but that possibility is more than remote.

I want to believe this was my Grandmother. Her listed home in Hungary and her destination in America are both different than Paul Schreiner's. That suggests to me that they didn't know each other before embarking from Hamburg. Did they meet on the ship, fall in love, and later marry? Katie's book says they were married in New Brunswick, NJ. Perhaps they corresponded, he from South Bend, and she from New York or New Jersey, waited until he was established in South Bend, and then married. This is what I want to believe.
